When it comes to Amazon India's sales, Jeff Bezos has the last laugh

Amazon India made headlines for selling volumes of products such as 'hing' (asafoetida) and 'churan' (a powder used to treat indigestion) during its flagship festival sales event this year, boosting its overall sales numbers. But the country’s second-largest e-marketplace also registered a deeper global presence this year by getting more sellers from India's small towns and cities to sell on its global platform.

Double the sales

More than 18,000 sellers from India participated in Amazon’s global Prime day sales event this year. Sales doubled for several of the repeat sellers from the previous year.

Unique and quirky

Amazon sold some very unique and quirky Indian products during its Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in the United States. Among these: Organic powders including henna, indigo, multani mitti, moringa and amla, and healing crystals.

Going places

Amazon India added the highest number of sellers from Coimbatore, followed by Kolkata, Kochi, Madurai and Pune. About half of the sellers from India who participated in Amazon’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this year were from small cities such as Jaipur, Udaipur and Agra.

95 million product lines

In terms of product additions at Amazon India this year, unstructured categories such as home décor topped the list, followed by apparel, wireless devices, books and kitchen utilities. Top categories in terms of sales were wireless devices, followed by apparel, books, personal computers and beauty products.

Of the total 1.4 lakh sellers on Amazon India, more than 1,500 are so-called crorepatis in terms of gross sales based on the actual selling price on the online marketplace. Of them, 250 sellers registered sales of above Rs 1 crore in October alone during Amazon’s Great Indian Festive Sale.

Amazon India served orders received from customers across 97% of the pin codes in India, including Fazilka in Punjab, Gariyaband in Chhatisgarh, and Kiphire and Longleng in Nagaland
