At least 60 police recruits have been killed after gunmen attacked a police training centre in Quetta, Pakistan.

Major General Sher Afgan, chief of the paramilitary Frontier Corps, said the attackers belonged to the banned Lashker-e-Jhangvi group, a militant group affiliated with al-Qaida.

The number of wounded has climbed over 100, Pakistani media reports claim and as many as 250 police cadets inside the centre have been rescued.

Gunfire Erupted Between Attackers and Security Personnel

Security forces and the gunmen exchanged fire, according to a SAMAA TVreport. Around 500 cadets were said to be present inside the centre’s hostel, many of whom were taken hostage by the attackers.

Balochistan Home Minister said one of the attackers was killed by security forces and two detonated their explosive vests.

More Than 250 Cadets Rescued

The terrorists stormed the centre's hostel on Saryab Road at around 10 pm, prompting an operation by the Pakistani Army and Frontier Constabulary troops who rescued at least 250 cadets.

The security forces in the operation have killed two terrorists and safely rescued 250 cadets from the ground and first two floors of the hostel

A deceased security man has been identified as Zubair Hameed.

Most of those being treated at city hospitals had gunshot wounds, although some sustained injuries jumping off the roof of the hostel and climbing a wall to escape the gunmen. Nearly all of the wounded were police, authorities said.

Five to Six Gunmen Attack Police Training Centre

Around 10 pm on Monday, between five to six terrorists entered a police training centre in Quetta, Balochistan and opened fire. The Pakistan Army and Frontier Constabulary troops had arrived on the spot to start a clean-up operation.

Balochistan Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti said initial reports showed there were around 500 police cadets and recruits in the college hostel when the attack took place from a back gate of the college.

At least five loud explosions were also heard from inside the college after the terrorists entered the premises.
