latest mobile figures today which showed overall there were 427.8 million mobile devices sold in Q1. This figure is up 19% over the same quarter last year and is attributed to the rise in smartphone sales. Over 100 million smartphones were sold in Q1 which shows there is still strong momentum
Although ranked first overall, Nokia had their worst quarter since 1997. Also, because smartphones fueled the increase and the quarter overall, Samsung saw their biggest quarter ever. Samsung’s sales are attributed to their high end “Galaxy S” Android devices. South Korean neighbor LG ranked third overall. LG’s high end smartphones did very well over seas. LG is introducing a complete line of high end Android products in the US over the next few quarters.
Gartner believes that consumers actually waited this year for phones announced at the tail end of last year to hit retail in the 1st quarter in 2011.
Other big movers and shakers included Taiwan based HTC who’s high end Android phones contributed to their success. In Q1 2011 HTC leap frogged Motorola and Sony Ericsson to come in 7th place.
